Immigration bill passed as Chicago contemplates deploying guard.

By: James Nixon

This week may prove to be the most somber period in recent U.S history for civil rights activists and disciples of the Constitution. On April, 23rd 2010 the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act or Arizona SB1070 was signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer. The state now has the authority to investigate anyone’s immigration status if there is a “reasonable suspicion” that they arrived here illegally. Legal, but just don’t have your “papers”? Expect to be arrested and thrown in a cell. The Senate Bill equates to some as racial profiling on steroids.

Now most of us could care less about the livelihood of illegal immigrants. We’re only human beings capable of caring primarily for the people that we have established relationships with. So how does this affect us legal citizens? It sets a new benchmark for 21st century justice. One that doesn’t factor in individual rights and freedoms. People will begin to feel comfortable around this totalitarian bill and resist less when a new bill is passed that directly impacts them. We all remember when the face of terror was that of an eccentric, brown skinned, thirty year old male of Middle Eastern decent. Many skeptical Americans predicted the impending morphing of this face into Joe and Nancy from down the street. That’s how governments pilfer away rights from their citizens. Condition them to feel at ease around the idea than slowly impose it upon the entire population.

So is it just a coincidence that headlines in another part of the country echo a similar eeriness to that of Arizona. This week Chicago lawmakers are urging the deployment of National Guard troops to curtail rampant gang violence. The police; or the frontline soldiers in this so-called battle, are entirely against the suggestion of declaring a mini-martial law. Instead of proclaiming a national emergency, city officials should devise long term solutions to this problem which could include improved education and the legalization of drugs. Deploying the National Guard is nothing more than a con to strip civil liberties from the American people. Powerful men don’t care about ignorant gangsters slaughtering each other in Chicago turf battles. Regardless, the heart of Wall Street continues to beat. So why than would they waste money to stop gang violence? The simple answer is to once again condition the American public to embrace a state of martial law. They will depend on mass media to relay a false message of success. Than in a few years Chicago will once again slip into a world of crime and corruption due to the lack of solid long-term solutions. If an American public witnesses the Guard being portrayed in a positive light they will be more willing to except Chicago on a exponentially larger scale.

I now urge all of you to further explore the specifics of these new measures. For those of who discount these words as that of paranoia and conspiracy I suggest you open a history book. You may chose to ignore this admonition but remember; the next bill may include you!
