An Open Letter to Americans Concerned With Haiti

Dear America,

You’d have to be living under a rock to not know that last Tuesday a massive earthquake shook the country of Haiti, causing an enormous amount of damage and ending a disgusting amount of lives. You’d also have to be blind, deaf, and dumb to not know that thousands of people are still dying and in dire need of food and medical attention. You’d have to be the average American to not really care.

Why should you care? If it wasn’t for the television or the Internet you wouldn’t know it existed. You’ve never met one of the tens of thousands of bodies that were burned in the streets because rescuers simply ran out of body bags. Nor did you know any of the business owners that were raided in massive riots in the wake of this disaster.

To be honest this earthquake is really none of your business, and there’s no shame in treating it that way. But please, don’t pretend to care. Don’t join a facebook group dedicated to the idea that a half a million people wearing red on the same day will somehow cure the thousands of Haitians on the verge of death. Clicking your mouse on an accept button of a group invite does not make you a better person, in fact all it really means is you have too much free time on your hands.
Try and explain to me how a bunch of wealthy celebrities wearing tiny ribbons to a massive party that celebrates gratuitous spending will bring the almost 200,000 people back to life. Oh and it would be a waste of time to pray, because there is a strong possibility this was our Christian God’s idea.

It would probably be much more beneficial to worry about the terrifying possibility that a few rich white tourists were unable to charter a private jet home from their stay in Haiti. Or maybe about your job, because after all, once we forget about Haiti our economic downturn still exists. Worry about things close to your home because those things matter. Some earthquake thousands of miles away is, in all honesty, less of an impact on your life than getting stuck at a red light. So don’t worry about finding cop out ways to rationalize your utter lack of interest in the subject, because really this subject has nothing to do with you.

Oh and if you do decide to “actually” donate “money,” make sure it’s actually “going” to Haiti….this is America after all.

Sincerely,

Just What You Wanted to Hear
